Hard to believe but police sketches have been around since the 1880. French criminologist Alphonse Bertillon was the first to introduce them as a policing strategy. Collecting a large amount of information (primarily on inmates) he developed a new system for identifying and archiving criminals. With the use of Bertillon’s identification methods French police was able to capture 241 offenders in 1884, after this success forensics science spread to other police departments around Europe and the United States.
But a good police sketches are difficult to produce and largely depends on the artistic skills of the person creating the sketch. In the following examples, you can browse through some of the less successful ones…
